64: MIYAJIMA

Miyajima's red torii gate is rated one of the top three best views in Japan. It was rainy and high tide when we arrived, giving us the classic floating torii.

There were tons of deer roaming the island. When we arrived at the top of Mount Misen, we were greeted with a deer and a view of... vast whiteness. On clear days, you are supposed to be able to see all the little islands and the great mountain ranges across the sea, but today all we saw was fog. However, the pictures and videos in the visitors area showed us how beautiful the view is in the summer!

By the time we descended the mountain, it was low tide down at the torii gate, so we headed out towards it to take pictures. I am so glad I bought my waterproof Gore-tex hiking shoes before I left, because everyone's feet were soaked except for mine, especially after we stepped onto the squelchy sand.
