161: HIKING FAIL

Wahhh so sad about the snow
It's July 1st, and the mountains are still covered in snow! We went to try the Eagle Bluffs hike at the top of Cypress Mountain, but we couldn't see any trail markers so we couldn't go more than 100 meters into the trail. We headed halfway down the mountain instead to do the Lower Hollyburn trails. It starts off at the outhouse by the lookout point, and you walk along the highway, until you reach a trail that makes you feel like you are really in nature. We lost our way multiple times and even went off-trail without realizing it, but we were determined to finish the loop. We plodded our way further and further uphill until we reached Blue Gentian Lake, and that was when the snow started to appear.

At first we thought we could continue even with the snow, but then Evy fell through the snow all the way down to her thighs and that freaked us out. The snow looked thick and secure but ended up being just a thin sheet with lots of empty space underneath. Then Gary started falling through the snow as well..poor guy had so much snow in his shoes by the end of it. Luckily, I skipped my way nimbly on top of the snow and was able to avoid falling through. It started to feel dangerous though, especially since we couldn't make out the trail markers anymore. We ended up having to turn around, which was disappointing. These trails seem to be very rarely used - we only ran into 5 people in the 5 hours we were there!
